Xacti HD1a HD camcorder adds wide display, more

Sanyo on Thursday introduced the Xacti HD1a, a compact digital media camera that records both still pictures and digital video. It does it all onto an SD flash memory card. The Xacti HD1a is coming in September for $699.99.

The Xacti HD1a records video in 720p and grabs 5.1 megapixel still images. Because it uses SD cards instead of bulky tapes or optical media, it's much more compact than other camcorders. It uses a 10x optical zoom lens and 2.2-inch LCD display.

New features in the HD1a include a 16:9 widescreen still picture mode, in-camera video editing, a 30 frames-per-second 320 x 240 MPEG-4 pixel video recording mode called “Web-SHQ," optimized for the video iPod.

The 16:9 still image mode grabs 3.8 megapixel images in the same wide-screen format as the Xacti HD1's digital videos.

Polaroid Says Goodbye to Instant Photo Technology

Polaroid, the company famous for their instant cameras and photos, has decided to shut down factories within the United States and abroad as they abandon the technology that made instant photos possible. Polaroid will cease all production of its film by next year.

It seems that the instantly gratifying Polaroid images have finally been done in by digital cameras and the endless Flickr pages full of digital images.

Polaroid's instant camera was first introduced in 1948. When it was first unveiled, it was large and bulky with a stainless steel body and black bellows, and the film came on a roll.

The next incarnation of the Polaroid instant camera came in 1963, when they introduced cartridge film with their 100-series camera. It became an instant hit with pro photographers, who would use the Polaroid to take test photos, and instantly use it to check lighting and composition.

'The Eye' delivers a few successful jolts

Jessica Alba stars in "The Eye," a remake of the Chinese film "Jian Gui." Considering Alba's less-than -stellar acting repertoire, the film seems at once destined to repeat the mistakes of its predecessors. Surprisingly, Alba's acting, though unsteady at times, is an improvement upon her past roles.

Sydney Wells (Alba) is an attractive, accomplished violinist who lost her vision at age five in a firecracker incident. We first join Wells on the day before a double cornea transplant, a surgery she had previously attempted fruitlessly. With the constant (at times, incessant) moral support of her sister, Helen (Parker Posey), Sydney's surgery is a success.

Along with the acquisition of her sight, Wells is awarded a conveniently attractive neural ophthalmologist, Dr. .

Monica Yant Kinney: Newlyweds fume after photo firm falters

Alicia Nelson's wedding went off precisely as dreamed. Her strapless taffeta dress had crystal beading that matched a necklace and bracelet borrowed from her Nana. Her mother wore an elegant black gown and her hair in a rare, glamorous up-do. Her father showed off months of dance lessons, leading his little girl to the Louis Armstrong classic "What a Wonderful World." And held next to Alicia's pink-and-green bouquet? Earrings belonging to her grandmother, who died weeks before the wedding. "The photographers," Alicia recalled, "took a lot of time" capturing the magic of her September day to remember. If only she had the pictures. Alicia is among hundreds of newlyweds and brides-to-be fuming at Celebration Studios, a tristate wedding-photography business that went belly-up amid $500,000 in tax liens without delivering contractually obligated memories.
