PocketSurfer browser to make waves

After a day with a PocketSurfer, DoubleClick can tell you it's a clever gadget. And at $399, Datawind will sell a lot of them this Christmas.

But we did find a few flaws - and there may be other devices out there that offer better value. More on that later.

The gadget looks a bit like a Nokia Communicator and fits neatly into the palm of your hand. It flips open to reveal a letterbox-style screen and a full qwerty keyboard.

It has a Vodafone SIM card in its innards and uses mobile data GPRS technology, but you can't use it to make a phone call. Nor will the PocketSurfer act as a music player, digital camera or mini-computer.

It does only one thing: browse the internet. It turns on instantly, and - thanks to Datawind's acceleration technology - loads web pages very quickly: typically in seven seconds or less, even though they're being beamed from Datawind's servers in Canada.

Macworld surprise may be a slim laptop

Jobs traditionally uses the Macworld Expo this month to showcase new products. Last time, it was the iPhone and Apple TV; the year before, faster Macs with Intel Corp. chips.

Piper Jaffray & Co. analyst Gene Munster and UBS AG's Benjamin Reitzes expect Jobs to capitalize on demand for the Mac by introducing a smaller, lighter version of Apple's MacBook notebooks. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analyst David Bailey anticipates a version of the iPhone with 16-gigabytes of storage, double the capacity of the current $399 device.

Restoration of islands in Lake of the Isles set to begin

Weather and ice conditions permitting, forestry crews will begin restoration work on the islands in Minneapolis' Lake of the Isles next week.

Non-native, invasive shrub species such as buckthorn and mulberry, as well as half-fallen trees that create safety hazards, will be cut down and burned to prepare for restoration of the islands' native habitat.

Crews will start on Mike's Island and move onto Raspberry Island as time and conditions permit. Four crews will work in various sections of the island, creating multiple burn sites. They also will treat buckthorn stumps with herbicide.

Large dead trees that are standing will be left, as they provide wildlife habitat.

The majority of downed trees along the island shorelines also will be left because of their habitat value for fish and shore birds.

WE'LL TAKE A CUT

Should any player be unhappy with a wage deferral, he could invoke a 14-day notice clause in his contract if he feels there has been a breach of its terms and conditions.

However, as players are not permitted to move outside of the transfer window, this option could be seen as counter-productive.

Casio Exilim EX-V7 digital camera

It turned out to be a challenge to get very worked up one way or the other about Casio's Exilim EX-V7 , a camera that balances out to be an almost perfectly average point-and-shoot. On the plus side, the 7x zoom lens covers a lot of territory, and the camera's battery life of almost 1,195 shots per charge is exceptional for its class. (The Nikon Coolpix S50c [ ] holds the lowest score, with 347 shots per charge; Samsung's NV11 [ ] performed best, achieving 1,233.) Throw in a few points, too, for a full range of manual exposure controls, a rarity in this category.

On the mildly annoying side, there's the zoom slider control, which is awkwardly placed adjacent and vertical to the LCD screen. Also, image stabilization proved too ineffective in most situations. And the plastic docking cradle, required to recharge the battery, will take up more room in a suitcase than most folks would care to sacrifice.
