Komputer Klinic: Find the right Christmas gifts for photo buffs

Thanks to digital cameras, more people than ever are interested in photography. You probably have a photo enthusiast or budding photographer on your Christmas list. Knowing what to buy photo buffs is tricky.

You may be tempted to purchase lenses, flashes or other expensive gear. Photographers are very particular. Unless youre an expert, skip these things.

Accessories such as batteries, memory cards and camera cases will be welcome.

But use some imagination. Here are some ideas to get you going:

Make the camera work wirelessly.

Some newer cameras feature Wi-Fi. This lets owners transfer photos to a computer wirelessly. Photos can also be uploaded to Web sites.

Likewise, youll find wireless transmitters for high-end cameras from Canon and Nikon.

Got Gucci? The Cell Phone vs. PDA Debate Will Be Settled By Function ...

One of the most durable debates in the mobile space centers on the differences between cell phones with PDA capabilities, and PDA-type devices that have built-in communications capabilities. More to the point, is it better and more productive to have a PDA with all sorts of built-in wireless technologies, or does it make more sense to use a cell phone that has been bulked up with a email, instant messaging and personal management applications that would seem to eliminate the need to carry a Palm- or Windows-based PDA device?

In most cases, personal preferences as to which device is the best fit come down to some very basic criteria: Which device has the longest battery life? Will I be responding to long emails and reviewing documents (in which case, the larger screen of a PDA with wireless capabilities might be the preferred model)? Is the device easily transported and does it have a minimal impact on the lean and clean lines of that Italian suit Ill be wearing (you can refer to this as the wireless Gucci Effect)?

My personal opinion is that it really doesnt matter, since most hybrid PDAs which usually sport a number of communications technologies, from Bluetooth to wide area wireless have been redesigned to look more like traditional cell phones and less like boxy PDAs.

Olympus Stylus 770 SW digital camera

The Olympus Stylus 770 SW is rugged and reasonably good looking. And that's pretty much where the praise runs out.

The 7.1-megapixel camera is designed for rough outdoor use, with a sealed housing that's shockproof, freeze-proof, and crush-proof, and waterproof to depths of 33 feet to boot. It even has a manometer, which records the depth or altitude at which a photo was shot. The waterproof part is no gimmick, as the camera shrugged off repeated dunkings in salt water on a couple of kayak expeditions. If we had the time to go to Alaska, it no doubt also would have laughed at repeated drops onto the frozen tundra.

Downsides? In Macworld jury tests, the camera did receive Good ratings across the board, but many shots came out soft and overexposed, and there's little room to override the camera's decisions.

Kingston Also Rolls Out a New SDHC, “Just” 16 GB Though

Since all modern digital cameras require a memory card for storing photos, memory card manufacturers are also tightly connected to the digital photo industry and thus to PMA2008. So, its actually no wonder that some of the respective companies, including here the people over at Kingston, used this opportunity in order to roll out several new products. .

Lil Find: A Diaper Bag For Pigskin Lovers

I can think of a few football fanatics who would flip for this football diaper bag. They're also liable to slap some "Chargers" or "Patriots" bumper stickers on the tote, but as long as the adhesives stay off the baby's skin, I'm okay with it. The brown vinyl tote is sure to score some serious points with the Super Bowl obsessed parent. .

Microsoft brings 360-degree videoconferencing to Ireland

A tabletop device, not much bigger than a traditional speakerphone at the base, it captures and provides a 360-degree panoramic view of everyone at the meeting. Microsoft RoundTable follows the conversation, identifying individual speakers and broadcasting their image in close-up as they talk; as people enter the conversation, the system cuts seamlessly between active speakers.

Traditional audio teleconferencing presents problems, with effective interaction falling away as the number of participants increases establishing who is speaking at any given time becomes more and more difficult.

Videoconferencing systems overcome this obstacle but are expensive and difficult to install, and can be complicated to operate. The results are a limited number of expensively adapted meeting rooms, which often need to be booked days in advance.

Delkin's New Dual Universal Battery Charger Wins Prestigious DIMA Award for Outstanding Design ...

Poway, CA. January 30, 2008 - Today Delkin's new Dual Universal Battery Charger was honored with the 2008 DIMA award for outstanding design and innovation. This unique charger for digital camera batteries combines universal compatibility among battery models with the ability to charge two batteries simultaneously. The need for a charger that can recharge two batteries of different models, voltages and even chemical composition at the same time has sprung up from the growth and development in the digi-cam market. "It is now common for households, or even individuals, to own multiple digital cameras," said Anna Lopez, Delkin's Battery Product Manager. "Many photographers own point and shoot cameras for day-to-day shooting, and a digital SLR for more serious photography. Different camera models seldom use the same battery, forcing photographers to carry an array of chargers." Delkin's Dual Universal Battery Charger is a single, two sided charger that uses individual charging plates specific to each camera battery, so it can charge almost any digital camera battery model.
