Xacti HD1a HD camcorder adds wide display, more

Sanyo on Thursday introduced the Xacti HD1a, a compact digital media camera that records both still pictures and digital video. It does it all onto an SD flash memory card. The Xacti HD1a is coming in September for $699.99.

The Xacti HD1a records video in 720p and grabs 5.1 megapixel still images. Because it uses SD cards instead of bulky tapes or optical media, it's much more compact than other camcorders. It uses a 10x optical zoom lens and 2.2-inch LCD display.

New features in the HD1a include a 16:9 widescreen still picture mode, in-camera video editing, a 30 frames-per-second 320 x 240 MPEG-4 pixel video recording mode called “Web-SHQ," optimized for the video iPod.

The 16:9 still image mode grabs 3.8 megapixel images in the same wide-screen format as the Xacti HD1's digital videos.

the undercover economist

Gordon, a little more scientifically, used detailed listings from catalogs to measure both price and quality of clothes.

Many economists still think that inflation is overestimated and we have therefore been getting richer faster than the official statistics show. But Gordon must have a point: If we have been getting rich that quickly, then our ancestors were impossibly poor. Gordon calculated that if the recent estimates of price bias are projected backward, Bruegel's peasant household would have had an income of less than $6 a year and been able to afford less than an ounce of potatoes a day back in 1569. That would have made for a different picture.

The Undercover Economist appears on Saturdays in the Financial Times Magazine.

Correction, June 6, 2006: The piece originally stated that Montgomery Ward's mail-order catalog was first published in 1893.

Sony Ericsson's Xperia X1 takes on iPhone, HTC Touch

A 3.2 megapixel camera also comes standard with the phone, which offers 30 fps VGA video recording and playback. Onboard memory is only 400 MB, but can be expanded with Sony and SanDisk's proprietary Memory Stick Micro memory up to 8 GB.

The X1 will face tough competition in the market from HTC's successful Touch line of Windows Mobile phones.

Reading the runes for Apple

Every January, Steve Jobs stands on the Macworld stage to announce Apple's plans for the year ahead and show off new products and services. What will there be this year? And how has it done lately, and how will it fare? And when - if ever - will Steve Jobs step down? We asked former Apple employees, software developers and analysts for their views.

We did ask a number of current Apple employees to take part anonymously; all however declined.

Chuq Von Rospach spent 17 years at Apple, working on enterprise and IT projects, before joining a Silicon Valley startup and "can now watch a Macworld Keynote without stressing out that everything works". David Sobotta worked at Apple for nearly 20 years, leaving in 2004 as director of federal sales. Mike Evangelist worked for Apple until July 2002, responsible for Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro and iDVD.
