New blow for Wendy Alexander as key aide quits
Wendy Alexander, Scottish Labour's embattled leader, has suffered another blow after it emerged a top aide is to quit. Although Labour officials were last night stressing Tony McElroy had been planning his departure for a while, the timing could hardly be worse for the party's leader. .
Review: 'Vantage Point' doesn't add up
Vantage Point: Drama. Starring Dennis Quaid, William Hurt and Forest Whitaker. Directed by Pete Travis. (PG-13. 90 minutes. At Bay Area theaters. For complete movie listings and show times, and to buy tickets for select theaters, go to sfgate.com/movies.) "Vantage Point" has a fractured and frustrating narrative. It presents a colossal terrorist attack in Spain, in which two bombs go off and the president of the United States is shot. We see this happen once, and then the clock is wound back and we see the same events happening again and again, each time from the perspective of another character. There should be a reason for filmmakers to tell a story in this way, and for a while the temptation is to look for one. For example, if all the recollections contradicted each other, then the movie could be a commentary on the faultiness of memory, particularly in recollecting moments of crisis.
New Ziff Davis Media/comScore Study Reveals Significant Entertainment ...
NEW YORK, Nov. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Ziff Davis Media announced today the results of a consumer study, fielded online among 1UP Network users in August 2007. The report conducted and presented by comScore, highlights growing consumer buying interests and trends amongst the gaming demographic. "This Thanksgiving weekend truly kicks off the year's busiest shopping season," states Rey Ledda, VP, Marketing, Events, and Research. "In a community where the value of word-of-mouth reigns supreme, the gaming demographic is becoming increasingly recognized as significant consumers and influencers by retailers, not just for their large investments in gaming- related products, but general products as well. Conducting this study among 1UP Network users allows us to gain invaluable insight not only for our own marketing efforts, but also for our advertisers.

Suppose yourself a National Basketball Association lottery pick. Suppose further that you are blessed with a big body but are somewhat limited (Im being kind here!) in skills. Say your rookie year free throw percentage was a reeking 59%. That aint just malodorous that kind of stench from the line should trigger an OSHA investigation. The HAZMAT guys shouldve been sent in to clean up the site! Say further that you have no shot; you must be within 5 feet of the hoop to score. In plain talk: you cant hit the side of a barn with a Gatling gun even if you are inside the barn. If you were being paid kajillions of dollars, would you dedicate a few minutes each summer to honing those skills and your craft? If that question seems rhetorical, consider the career statistics of a certain overpaid NBA athlete.
Reviving the J-School
You do need to understand your audience, your community and the business you are in. You do need to appreciate the role of independent media, grasp the explosion of communications vehicles and value the First Amendment rights of a free press. And you’d benefit enormously from a solid liberal arts underpinning as well as a defined area of expertise. That’s why we have journalism schools. Our role is to prepare better journalists, provide them the tools to enter the marketplace and meet the demands of the industry for ready-to-work graduates that probably can not be met by English majors. Isn’t that what universities do for aspiring doctors, lawyers, chemists, engineers, teachers, philosophers and even businessmen? By the way, Michigan may not have a j-school, but I’ve taught a course in its journalism program, so I’d like to think it does value what we do.
