| Xacti HD1a HD camcorder adds wide display, more
Sanyo on Thursday introduced the Xacti HD1a, a compact digital media camera that records both still pictures and digital video. It does it all onto an SD flash memory card. The Xacti HD1a is coming in September for $699.99. The Xacti HD1a records video in 720p and grabs 5.1 megapixel still images. Because it uses SD cards instead of bulky tapes or optical media, it's much more compact than other camcorders. It uses a 10x optical zoom lens and 2.2-inch LCD display. New features in the HD1a include a 16:9 widescreen still picture mode, in-camera video editing, a 30 frames-per-second 320 x 240 MPEG-4 pixel video recording mode called “Web-SHQ," optimized for the video iPod. The 16:9 still image mode grabs 3.8 megapixel images in the same wide-screen format as the Xacti HD1's digital videos.
Review: Nikon Coolpix P50 digital camera
Nikon's P50 high-end digital compact camera swims against the tide of wafer-thin devices. The camera's 3.6x zoom lens and the fast Expeed processor borrowed from Nikon’s SLRs are encased in a traditional-looking, relatively bulky, body. Clearly, then, this is a camera for those who look for good value and appearance, with online stores offering the P50 at around £150. Power comes courtesy of two regular AA batteries, providing 140 shots. Even with batteries and an SD memory card inserted the P50 feels lightweight, despite its looks. It does boast features such as a spongy, leather-look grip, and both an optical viewfinder and a 2.4in screen. A light sensitivity range from ISO50 to ISO2000 is broader than most in its class.

Teen`s Interview With John Lennon Yields Oscar Nod
A 1969 encounter between a 14 year-old Beatles fan and John Lennon has inspired "I Met the Walrus," a five-minute Canadian film contending for an Oscar for best animated short. Think "Almost Famous" with the Beatles. Except this portrait of a young boy in a dream landscape is told from his lips. The voice track for "I Met the Walrus" is based on an interview Jerry Levitan did 39 years ago with a surprisingly accommodating John Lennon. Levitan, now a lawyer in Toronto, recalls doorstepping as a fake photographer to get into Lennon and Yoko Ono's room at the city's King Edward Hotel. "My heart was beating so fast. I was like Al Pacino in 'The Godfather,' where he's in the restaurant with the planted gun and about to kill the cop," he says, remembering how he summoned the courage to knock at Lennon's door.
Quik Pod offers self-portraits, made from within arm's reach
Heather Hill's column on consumer trends, gadgets and useful news appears each Tuesday in The Sun. Her daily online column can be found at www.lowellsun.com under the heading "Heather Help Us." We've all done it. Rather than ask a stranger to take your photo, you extend your arm as far out in front of you as possible, lean back and smile — and hope you get the appropriate background and faces within the frame. It can make for a goofy shot. And unless you don't mind pictures that are mostly forehead or double chin, the results are usually rather unflattering. But thanks to a handy new gizmo called Quik Pod, decent self-portraits are within arm's reach. A classic example of "Why didn't anyone think of this before," Quik Pod is a slim, telescoping device that serves as an extension of your arm, thus putting an end to those too-close closeups.
Henderson talks about coming to Norman, OU
In 1967, George Henderson's faculty mentor at Wayne State University in Detroit told him not to pull up stakes and take a teaching position complete with $5,000 pay cut at the University of Oklahoma. The state is full of rednecks and was a "second class place," the mentor told him. "You can do better," he advised. Besides, Norman was a known "sundown" town where African Americans were expected to be out of town by sundown or suffer the consequences. George and Barbara Henderson's children voted the move down. Henderson didn't listen to the mentor or his children. On a plane, flying over the red-dirt Midwest headed to an Oklahoma interview, an inner voice took hold and Henderson made the decision to come to OU as one of the university's first African American faculty members.
