Tech meets tough in LR3

When you take delivery of a new car, the salesperson normally sits in the passenger seat, spends a few minutes making sure you're familiar with all the controls, and then bids you good luck.

If you happen to be buying today's test car - a 2008 Land Rover LR3 - an hour's worth of classroom instruction would only be enough to touch on the vehicle's multiple systems and controls. That's certainly one reason the company includes a lengthy DVD tutorial along with the thick owner's manual. The DVD is must viewing for any new Rover owner - it has an amazing amount of technology incorporated into its innate toughness.

Last spring, I was able to drive several Land Rovers on an off-road course the company's marketers set up on the 25-acre grounds of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Endi cott House in Dedham.

about this blog

Few people apparently knew much about what was happening at 11 Coach Lane in Barnstable until Ann Gryboski shot and killed Lancaster on Easter Sunday. She told police she killed him as he came at her when she attempted to break up a fight between him and their 25-year-old son, Christopher.

Gryboski, a doctor in South Yarmouth, also told police that Lancaster had physically and mentally abused her and their two sons for years... Read the rest of this Globe story here. Leave a comment _____________________________

It culminated this summer in a three-month trial featuring more than 100 witnesses, some of whom have since assumed new identities out of fear of retribution for testifying against four members of the Washington Nomads Chapter of the Hells Angels.

Last month former Hells Angel Rodney Rollness of Snohomish was sentenced to life in prison for Walsh's murder. Joshua Binder of North Bend, also a former Hells Angel, pleaded guilty to federal racketeering charges for his involvement in the shooting. He is scheduled to be sentenced next month.

Rollness, 46, denied gunning down Walsh. At sentencing, he denounced his trial as a sham choreographed by crooked cops who have been gunning for him for years. He vowed to clear his name on appeal.

A jury found Rollness guilty of a dozen crimes, including a murder in support of racketeering.

La Nina and severe weather in the Ohio Valley...there seems to be a bond between the two entities. Much like the bond between Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, or Daryl Hall and John Oates, or maybe even Ed McMahon and Johnny Carson. You get the idea. Just for review, La Nina is the abnormal cooling of the tropical Pacific waters that usually spells warm and wet weather for the Blue Grass state. But when that warm, moist air clashes with colder, drier air to the north, stronger-than-normal storm systems for mid-winter standards tend to be the result. The past tells us a La Nina pattern can be a recipe for trouble in this part of the world. Sure enough, history repeated itself on February 5th. The "Super Tuesday Outbreak" was one for the ages!

Now I won't rehash all the stats about that deadly night in this post (our links about that are on the weather page just below the forecast discussion), but I want to discuss how similar our current pattern is to another La Nina season: 1973-1974.

Briefly: Apple selling Polk, NWU student poll, more

In brief: Apple stores are now selling Polk Audio products, students at Northwestern University are using Facebook and the iPhone to perform a statistical analysis, and Tessera Technologies is in the process of acquiring FotoNation. Starting in March 2008, Apple's US retail outlets will sell the I-Sonic ES2 sound system, which features iTunes tagging for HD radio, allowing users to bookmark songs. Once songs are tagged, users can attach the iPod to their computer, and preview, buy, and download the tagged tracks.

Northwestern University graduate students are using the Mimieo social networking service to perform a study of which Superbowl ads were most appealing to users. After every quarter, the page compiled responses of how liked the ads were, and whether or not the advertisement influenced potential shopping decisions for viewers.

The death of Chicago news anchor Randy Salerno is receiving national attention after a snowmobile accident in Vilas County. The 45-year old Salerno died January 24 after a crash near Sayner. The driver he was riding with, Scott Hirschey is now facing charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. A criminal complaint says Hirschey's blood alcohol level was .22% four hours after the crash. The legal limit to drive in Wisconsin is .08.

So far this season 15 people have died in snowmobile accidents in Wisconsin - and alcohol is believed to have been a factor in 10 of those 15 deaths.

Whenever the topic of drinking and snowmobiling comes up - fingers point in lots of different directions. Should there be stricter laws and stiffer penalties? Should there be more authorities patrolling the trails? Can we blame the bartenders who serve the drinks? Or is it a matter of personal responsiblity - resting entirely on the shoulders of those who drink and drive? Maybe think drinking and snowmobiling isn't a problem at all.

We were expecting some device announcements at Mobile World Congress from Nokia and the did not disappoint with the announcement of 4 new devices. They announced the Nokia 6220 Classic, 6210 Navigator, N78, and N96. I had the opportunity to meet with various product managers to talk about the devices and also took several pictures and some video that will be posted later when I get some time away from the show floor.

The 6220 Classic is a very compact mobile phone designed for the person coming from a feature phone to the S60 platform who wants phone that excels in still photography since it has a Carl Zeiss 5-megapixel digital camera with a Xenon flash. It also has a GPS receiver and HSDPA support.

Another of the 6000 series announced was the 6210 Navigator that focuses on and provides a great GPS experience.
